This horse is handmade completely from clay. It was fired in a raku kiln and while the piece was red hot, it was removed from the kiln and placed in a can with combustible material where it caught on fire. A lid was placed on the can which changed the atmosphere around the horse to create the color changes in the glaze ranging from copper to green. The glaze has a satin-matte feel to the surface.
Once cool, the horse was removed from the can and cleaned to show the colors of the horse. There is a wire in the head and tail, but the horse is hollow. This horse is free-standing. Each one is handmade so there are never two alike.
As expected with a Raku firing, the thermal shock coming out of the kiln is extreme. This can produce small cracks on the surface which mirror the fragile strength of the horse. These are not flaws, but add to the beauty of the piece.
