This horse is handmade completely from clay. After forming the horse, it was burnished with a soft cloth to create a smooth finish with a light sage green color. Once bisque fired, it was fired in a raku kiln and while the piece was red hot, it was removed from the kiln and actual horse hair was burned onto the surface to create the black lines.
The piece was later cleaned to leave a smooth finish and reveal a great depth and character to the horse. There is a wire in the head and tail, but the horse is hollow. As expected with a Raku firing, the thermal shock coming out of the kiln is extreme. This can produce small cracks on the surface which mirror the fragile strength of the horse. These are not flaws, but add to the beauty of the piece.
This horse is free-standing. Each one is handmade so there are never two alike.
