This piece was hand made on the potter’s wheel from porcelain clay. The vase has red colored crystals on a deep ruby background. The crystals you see on the vase are actual zinc crystals that were formed during the firing! The background has a satiny type of feel to it in areas. The color seems to change depending on the light source- it looks darker in dim light and bright (like the photos) in direct light.

Due to the unique nature of crystalline glazes, no two pieces are ever alike. The crystals are actually grown during the firing and cooling process (which reaches over 2300 degrees Fahrenheit). The time and temperature must be accurate in order to achieve crystal growth on the piece. The vase was fired a third time after the initial glaze firing in a gas kiln to create the red colors.
